Goldsmiths Design student makes 2015 Orwell Prize trophy

For the fourth year running, Goldsmiths Design has partnered with the Orwell Prize to design and produce bespoke trophies for the prestigious prize for political writing. Keir Middleton, a Goldsmiths student (BA DCL year 3), made the trophies this year, as well as having been part of the team that made them last year. Keir will attend the awards on the 21st of May, and feature prominently in all the press releases and publicity surrounding the Prize, as past students have done. The partnership has been hugely beneficial mutually, and the link gets stronger every year.

Design Graduates Scheme talk: Nemi Gardner

A new series of events has started in the Design department, with our very own alumni as speakers, talking to current students about the interesting things they’ve done: the Design Graduates Scheme talks! After last week’s session on Kickstarter with Ben Redford, this Thursday we’ll hear Nemi Gardner talk about Biomodd, a design bio-hacking platform that began as a gaming art installation. The talk will begin at 6 pm on Thursday, May 21st, in room 301 (Postgraduate Studios).

Design Graduates Scheme talk: Ben Redford

On Friday, May 15th, BA Design graduate Ben Redford held a talk about funding projects through Kickstarter, first in a new series of talks that aim to bring back Goldsmiths Design graduates to share their interesting work experiences with current students.

Ben touched on all aspects of getting a project on its feet with crowdfunding, from the initial idea to the last stages of production and shipping, going through the importance of online promotion and accurate costing. He shared stories of his successful Kickstarter-funded projects (Projecteo, a small projector for Instagram photos transferred to film), but he didn’t shy away from talking about his failures, too (Olly, a web-connected smelly robot).
