Last month, during the London Design Festival, design was everywhere- even in a tree house three meters high. Second year BA Design student Belen Palacios had an idea: to take conversations on design in a different space altogether. With support from a group of fellow students, sponsors and many other people who believed in her project, Belen set things in motion, and after a long process of gathering funds, planning, designing and building, Tree Hub became reality and between 12 – 22 September hosted talks on a varied number of current issues, all limited to an exclusive maximum audience of ten. Design Matters postgraduate seminars
Throughout the academic year that just started, the Design Department at Goldsmiths has planned a series of postgraduate research seminars under the title “Design Matters”. The sessions are targeted at MPhil/PhD students as a path for presenting research to peers and colleagues. The schedule includes roundtable discussions, panels and guest speakers; the first seminar, which takes place on October 23rd, will be a PechaKucha style presentation of doctoral research topics.

The Welsh Space Campaign on display
We are very proud of 2013 BA Design graduate Hefin Jones, who is the winner of this year’s Christine Risley Award for his graduation project “The Welsh Space Campaign”. The official award ceremony will take place on the evening of Thursday, October 10th, in the Constance Howard Gallery at Goldsmiths, where the space suit is on display until October 24th (entry to the exhibition is free).
The Christine Risley Award is given annually to a Goldsmiths graduate for outstanding textile work, and Hefin’s project is definitely remarkable and deserving. Hefin created a space suit from materials sourced in Wales and with help from Welsh craftsmen. Connections: MA Fashion students on their first brief
Goldsmiths Design’s first class of MA Fashion students are just getting to know each other, and what better way to bond than working together? For their first brief, Connections,the students brought old clothing items they no longer wear and stitched them together into a quilt that will be officially presented to the world on Friday.
