Time flies, and the 2014 undergraduate degree show is almost upon us: to be more precise, it will happen between 30 May and 2 June at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane. This year’s graduating class has chosen the name “MATTER” for their final exhibition. “Objects don’t exist in isolation and neither should our work – we want to reveal process. This is reflected in the graphic identity and the show build – a method of making that is self evident in its appearance”- reads the description of the show’s concept, which you can find alongside a manifesto on the MATTER Facebook page. The show also has a fresh Twitter account, so follow them to keep up to date with the preparations.

That is all we can tell you for now, but stay tuned.

Inventing the Social

On May 29 and 30, the Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process at Goldsmiths (based in the Sociology department) is celebrating its tenth anniversary with an event that will explore the challenges of “inventing the social”.  Dr Alex Wilkie from the Design department is one of the event’s organisers.

“In this symposium, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of CSISP by exploring renewed efforts at the socialisation of technology, the environment and implicated entities, both as a phenomenon to be investigated and as a challenge to savour and respond to. We are especially interested in the question of whether and how the ‘return of the social’ involves a radicalization of the ‘performativity’ agenda in social and cultural research and theory”, reads an excerpt from the Symposium’s description, which you can find in full here, alongside a full list of speakers, respondents and chairs.

Park Yourself student project at the Greenwich Series

The student project Park Yourself continues to attract interest: after their picnic in a Greenwich car park made the news, the team will now make an appearance at the Greenwich Series of monthly talks, which this month takes place on Monday April 7th, at The Tree House, 1 King William Walk. The event is free, and you’ll have the chance to hear other interesting speakers as well- see the full list HERE.

Design and Social Science seminar: Rubbish metrics and genomic idiots

Wednesday, April 2nd brings us a new seminar in the Design and Social Science series, titled: “Rubbish metrics and genomics idiots: live methods and data-intensive provocations”. The speakers will be Adrian Mackenzie, from Lancaster University, and Ruth McNally, from Anglia Ruskin University. Their presentation will describe four years worth of attempts to inhabit genomic databases ethnographically and to construct provocations from the data.

The seminar takes place in room 137a of the Richard Hoggart Building, starting 4 pm; as usual, entry is free.
