The 2015 Degree exhibition ‘xvshow’ is almost here

xvshow

This year’s Undergraduate Degree show, ‘xvshow’, will open tomorrow, 5 June, with the private view evening, and will then be open to the public until 8 June at 4 pm. The place is The  Old Truman Brewery, Ely’s Yard, 15 Hanbury Street, postcode E1 6QR.

“Out there is a world filled with complexity and contradictions; built from infinite intertwining systems; where change is the only constant; where uncertainty is certain and defining is problematic.

Here you will find a design practice which acknowledges, engages with, enjoys and acts upon the complexity of the world. Here you will navigate through fields of interrogation which intersect and then separate, which connect and then contradict”, says the show’s manifesto.

Don’t miss xvshow! And before you visit, have a look at the show’s website to find out what the projects are all about in a nutshell, and where they stand on different scales of Public/Private, Artificial/Natural, Fiction/Reality etc.

Keir Middleton on his Orwell Prize designs: “I wanted to create something that emulated the cut and dry policies of European politics”

Yesterday was the ceremony for the 2015 Orwell Prize for political writing, and as we previously informed you, the trophies were designed and made by year 3 BA DCL student Keir Middleton. What inspired Keir in his work on the trophies?

“The design was inspired by Polish communist propaganda, which I believed mirrored both the stark and brutal writing in George Orwell’s famous satire 1984, as well as the communist apartment buildings that could be seen throughout East Berlin, as well as much of communist Europe, before the end of the Cold War.

“When designing the trophies, I wanted to create something that emulated the cut and dry policies of politics throughout Europe.”

“Design has always been so prominent in my life and Goldsmiths has given me the opportunity to nurture this passion of mine. I aim to pursue a career in teaching design to the younger generation or to further my own skills in the field.”

Keir was also part of the team that designed last year’s Orwell prize trophy. You can read a more detailed story on this year’s event on the Goldsmiths website.

Goldsmiths Design student makes 2015 Orwell Prize trophy

For the fourth year running, Goldsmiths Design has partnered with the Orwell Prize to design and produce bespoke trophies for the prestigious prize for political writing. Keir Middleton, a Goldsmiths student (BA DCL year 3), made the trophies this year, as well as having been part of the team that made them last year. Keir will attend the awards on the 21st of May, and feature prominently in all the press releases and publicity surrounding the Prize, as past students have done. The partnership has been hugely beneficial mutually, and the link gets stronger every year.
