As part of their first year Image technical studies, undergraduate students were asked to recreate a music album cover or film poster using whatever props and lighting they have available. Here are a few of the results:
Last week we had our first graduating cohort of the MA Design Expanded Practice. The ceremony was specially designed for our programme and was full of happiness and celebration.
As part of the Ceremony, we asked Morgan Thorne, from the Interaction and Technology Studio to give the Graduate Address. Her speech was warm, moving and embodied many of the values we hope to support in the programme. We asked Morgan if we could publish her speech, and she kindly agreed:
Professor Waller and staff of Goldsmiths, honourable guests, parents, guardians, friends and fellow Graduates – I am honoured to stand before you on behalf of all the students graduating today.
I’m originally from Barbados, a small island in the Caribbean. Before moving to London I was in New York City working in Advertising, and although I loved New York, I wasn’t passionate about my practice. When I decided to go back to university I spent a long time thinking about my future and the type of work I wanted to create. So, when I saw the description for our course, the focus on interdisciplinary collaboration from such a wide variety of studios, one that was said to “ challenge the role and norms of traditional design” and “push boundaries of what design can be and do”, it instantly felt like the right choice. The Graduate Design Scheme is an opportunity for Goldsmiths Design graduates to return on campus and work on their own projects: for a fee, they can use a studio space, the workshops, and book machinery. This academic year, Rada Lewis (BA Design 2010) came back to Goldsmiths to develop a personal project based on a Bulgarian folk tale with political connotations about revenge, unity and how we can learn to live with each other.
Rada is bringing to life the “The Wolf and His Victims” through puppets constructed primarily out of paper; the outcome of the project will be a book and, ultimately, a stop-motion animated film. You can read the story and see images from the project on Rada’s website.
On how the project started:
“My work has always been text-based, I’m interested in text – fiction as well as non-fiction. I am from Bulgaria, and my sister sent me some Bulgarian folk stories she found extremely amusing, just for a laugh. I read this and I thought, I need to draw it. So first I started drawing it with pencils, then I started making the characters out of paper.
