MA Design graduates 2016: Katherine Tse uses home resources to expose the effort behind manufacturing clothes

For her graduation project from the MA in Design: Critical Practice, Yuen Wa Tse (Katherine) took on the laborious task of making silk underwear with home resources, in order to highlight the effort that even the most mundane clothing items require in their manufacturing process. She also aimed to produce items uncoupled from the fetishisation of gender identity:

How did you decide on fast fashion and gender identity in fashion as the topic for your graduation project?

Fashion is intimately tied to our human bodies and our identity. Fast fashion can been seen as an outgrowth of high fashion in its aim to accommodate a more expressive individuality. I am particularly interested in the authenticity of an individual’s sense of self, gender and sexuality through fashion. Prospective students were introduced to Design at Goldsmiths at last week’s Undergraduate Open Day

What’s it like to be a Design student at Goldsmiths? What can you expect from the course and the campus facilities? This past Saturday, 8 October, was a good day to find out, as Goldsmiths welcomed prospective students and their families for an Undergraduate Open Day.

Reunion evening at Goldsmiths Design Festival brought Design alumni together

Last Friday, the Design department and the Development and Alumni office at Goldsmiths organised a special reunion evening for Design graduates, as part of the 2016 Goldsmiths Design Festival.

Alumni were invited to enjoy a drink, mingle and network in the beautiful space of the St James Hatcham Gallery, amongst exhibits from this year’s MA Show; entertainment was ensured with music mixed live by Goldsmiths student Ballerino. The evening also included two alumni talks: Nicholas O’Donnell-Hoare (MA Design: Critical Practice graduate) focused on the challenges of designing in a world affected by climate change, while Chasity Johnson (MA Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship) presented the development process of her ethical fashion store, Haute Ecology.

Were you unable to make it to the reunion evening? Don’t panic, we’ve recorded the talks for you:

Correspondence from Goldsmiths Design’s Charlie Evans, Designer in Residence in Taiwan (VI)

This summer, Charlie Evans (2014 BA Design graduate, and currently a Technical Tutor in the Department) spent two months in Taipei, on a Designers in Residence program for the British Council in Taiwan. Charlie sent us regular correspondence with impressions from his experience; we’re publishing his sixth letter today.

The customer enters the stall and stands facing me.

I tuck a tissue in their sock or around their footwear collar to act as a foot-bib.

I gently clean their knee with soap and a silicon sponge. Continue reading “Correspondence from Goldsmiths Design’s Charlie Evans, Designer in Residence in Taiwan (VI)”
