Silent Auction for charity featuring work from Goldsmiths designers

On 2 September, a silent auction of artwork will take place in the 310 New Cross Road exhibition space at SE14 6AF, open to the public between 10 am- 5 pm. The purpose of the auction is to raise funds for EduHaitian, a small charity supporting children’s education in Haiti, c0-founded and run by Olivia Owen, recent Goldsmiths International Studies graduate.

“EduHaitian’s mission is to give vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Haiti a chance to receive education and schooling through an established programme of sponsorships. Since 2011, EduHaitian has supported 47 children through private funding, fundraised entirely from our voluntary efforts. For each £250 raised, another child will join our programme from September. The cost is inclusive of tuition, locally sourced and brought uniforms, books, stationary and any further tuition required to bring in meet the education needs of each child.”

The exhibition will include work from Goldsmiths design students and recent graduates and features extracts of design processes, sketches, preliminary research, final pieces, or example of side practices that informs our design practice (photography, illustration, writing, etc).

MAKING DRONES workshop for Goldsmiths Design students

drone

As part of our upcoming Goldsmiths Design Festival, our Design students are invited to take part in a free workshop on making drones with recent MA Interaction Design graduate Jon Flint. The workshop will be an all-day event on 5 September, taking place in the Postgraduate Design Studios at Goldsmiths, and it will provide an introduction to drone technology and principles of flight, followed by practical prototyping with working electronics.

Why drones? Because we need to think and speculate about our life with them as they become less controversial. What will their possible uses be? What will their users be like? The workshop will try to encompass who these future users might be and what they might use a mini drone for.

Having worked on the Drone Aviary project by Superflux, Jon Flint is just the right person to teach you about drones! If you want to know more about his work and approach to design, have a look at our previous interviews with Jon on his graduation project and his return to the Goldsmiths Design workshops  as part of our graduate program.

From 3rd – 9th September Goldsmiths’ Department of Design opens its doors to the public for a week of free events bringing together some of the most significant names in the design industry and showcasing the incredible work of its staff and students.

Interview with alumna Zara Arshad of Design China

If you’re interested in knowing more about Chinese design, you will surely benefit from a conversation with alumna Zara Arshad, who has been working in China and writing about its designers and their output for a while now. We interviewed Zara on her international experience and other things:

Q: What was it like to study Design at Goldsmiths? What were you expecting when you first started out and how did reality compare to your expectations?

A: Studying on the BA (Hons) Design programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London was definitely the best fit for me, since I had just completed my IB Diploma at the British International School in Jakarta, Indonesia and, therefore, arrived at the course from a very academic background. I really didn’t know what to expect though. The programme was exceptionally strong from a conceptual point of view and very flexible: we were encouraged to move across various (design) disciplines for studio projects, and use these opportunities to experiment, rather than to develop a specific style too early on. Overall, I am very grateful to Goldsmiths Design for the “way of thinking” it taught me. Continue reading “Interview with alumna Zara Arshad of Design China”
